## What MT2 research does and does not show

Melanotan 2 is a man-made peptide that switches on melanocortin receptors, and labs have used it to study how the body makes melanin. Only one small human study exists, a 1996 phase I pilot. Nobody has run a large registered safety trial in people. Back in 2009, authors writing in the BMJ said public use of MT2 had raced past the science. A 2020 case report then linked it to a blocked blood supply in a kidney, called renal infarction.
